    Name of Activity: Black History Stations
    Purpose: To get the kids active while learning about Black History
    Grade level: K-2
    Materials needed: Jump ropes, cones , Fleeceballs (instead of baseballs), Nerf footballs, and mini hurdles
    Divide students into six groups and assign each group to a station.( or however you would like)
    Introduce the famous African American and explain the activity for each station. Rotate students every 2-3 minutes.
    1) OTIS BOYKINS -- HEART RATE — Otis invented the Pacemaker.
    Discuss heart rate and demonstrate where students can find their heart rate using the carotid artery. Ask student to feel for their heart rate before and after jumping rope. Was it faster?
    2) MICHAEL JORDAN -- DRIBBLE - Michael won six championships for the Chicago Bulls.
    Dribble around 10 cones while keeping control.
    3) JACKIE ROBINSON -- UNDERHAND THROW - Jackie was the first African American to play in the Major League Baseball organization.
    Practice throwing a fleece ball underhand with a partner.
    4) WILLIE THROWER -- OVERHAND THROW - Willie was an NFL Quarterback.
    Practice throwing a football overhand with a partner.
    5) GEORGE POAGE -- HURDLE -George won two bronze medals in hurdle races.
    Jump over a set of mini hurdles.
    6) DEHART HUBBARD -- LONG JUMP - Dehart won a gold medal for the long jump.
    Challenge yourself to jump farther each jump.

    1) Now that you know how to check your heart rate lets put it to the test!
    1st- Place two of your fingers(pointer and middle finger) over your pulse. Now that you have an idea of what your rate is like at rest lets see what happens when you exercise.
    2nd- Grab one of the jump roes that I have provided for you.
    3rd- Jump for about 2 minutes then STOP!
    4th- Now check your pulse again
    Any change?

    2) Since Michael Jordan was an amazing basketball player, in this activity I am going to set up 10 cones.
    Your challenge is to dribble the basket ball around all 10 of the cones! Think you can do it?! GOOD LUCK!

    3) Now that you know Jackie Robinson was a baseball player we are going to test our skills with throwing underhand!
    -Grab a partner and try it!
    REMEMBER: Throw underhand *
    Keep up the good work! Were almost done :)
    4) Staying with the same partner lets practice throwing overhand with a football this time.

    5) Get your running shoes ready! Now we are going to pretend we are in the olympics and we are about to win a gold medal for hurdles.
    - I have set up 6 lines of mini hurdles for you to see how good you are

    6) Now that you have already practice your jumping skills we are going to see how long you can jump!
    -Grab a partner, one partner jump as long as you can, the other partner stand where they landed and see if they can top their one long top.

    George Poage was the first African American athletic medalist. He won 2 medals in hurdle racing in the Olympics.
    6) Dehart Hubbard:
    Dehart Hubbard broke records right out of the gate and jumped so far they had to lengthen Ferry Field's long jump pit. In his junior year, he won Olympic gold in Paris to become the first African-American to accomplish the feat.
